Everything you need to know about UGC NET 2020

The National Eligibility Test (NET) also known as UGC NET, is one of the toughest entrance exams in India. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC) for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for the Eligibility of Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Assistant Professor Both in Indian Universities and Colleges.

For a lecturer position in universities & government colleges,  NET qualification is mandatory nowadays. The exam is conducted twice a year and in 2020 the first exam is scheduled from 15th to 20th June 2020. The registration process will start from 16th March 2020 through online mode on the official website. The aggregate performance of the candidate in Paper I and Paper II of UGC-NET will define if they are an appropriate candidate for Eligibility for Assistant Professor or not.

UGC-NET Eligibility Criteria:
Interested candidate appearing for UGC NET 2020 need to fulfill some eligibility criteria are -

• Master’s degree from a recognized University preferably in the subjects of Humanities, Electrical Sciences, Computer Science, Social Sciences, etc.
• Candidates appearing for the final year exam of Post graduation in the year 2020 can also apply.
• Applicants with a reservation should have at least 50% of the score in UGC-NET
• Candidates should achieve a minimum of 55% of marks in the NET examination
• Candidates are obliged to appear for the subject of their qualifying exam only. Students whose qualifying exam subject remains uncovered in the subject list mentioned by UGC are required to appear in a related subject only.

Who can give the UGC-NET exam?

• The minimum eligible age limit has been set to 28 years for general category
• A relaxation of 5 years is given to candidates of reserved category
• The LLM Degree holder gets a relaxation of 3 years. For becoming Assistant Professor there are no age limits defined
• No maximum age limit is defined for Lectureship or Asst. Professorship
• For Junior Research Fellowship, the maximum age limit will be 30 years as on 1st January 2020

Important Note: For transgender candidates, relaxation in fee, age and qualifying criteria of NET is at par with SC/ST and other categories.

What is the pattern of the exam?
The exam pattern comprises of 2 papers which are essential to attend for final selection.

In Paper 1: The paper is comprised of 50 questions of 100 marks. This paper tests the ability of candidates in comprehension, reasoning ability, general awareness, and divergent thinking.

In Paper 2: The paper will be of 100 questions of 200 marks. There are generally 3 sections, the first one comprises questions from Logical Reasoning, General Aptitude, Graphical Analysis, and Numeric Ability, etc. The second section consists of Multiple-choice questions, covering numerous topics of the related subjects. For Engineering Science Subject, questions related to Mathematics and Engineering Aptitude are there in the exam.

The final section consists of comprehension questions, in which a total of 5 subjects in UGC NET 2020 including Atmospheric, Mathematical Sciences, Earth, Planetary Science, Ocean, Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, and Physical Science.
